Architectural description

Sevilla

From 1147 Seville is governed by the Almohads, a time of greatest splendor of its Islamic past, they built a minaret for the main mosque that we know as Giralda and a watchtower on the banks of the Guadalquivir, the Torre del Oro.

In 1248 the city will be conquered by the king of Castilla León. In the place that occupied the main mosque, the cathedral will be erected in Gothic style and later it will be continued in Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The Almohad minaret will grow and become the bell tower of the cathedral, the Giralda.

Next, we contemplate the bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería. Its works began in 1760 with a typology that has its roots in the Roman coliseums.

To facilitate communication between the two banks of the Guadalquivir, the Isabel II Bridge, known as the Triana Bridge, was built. It was built between 1845-1852 with iron and stone in the same place as the Puente de Barcas which it replaced. The latter was built in 1171 by the Almohads and lasted until the construction of the new bridge.

Following the direction of the waters of the Guadalquivir we find the Plaza de España, which was built in a historicist style for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.

The skyline shows another configuring agent of the city present throughout its entire existence, the Guadalquivir River, which provides drinking water, irrigation, a means of transport for people and goods, and unites countries and continents.
