Architectural description
Alcázar de Toledo
Outside the four facades were articulated differently. The profile represents the northern façade, consisting of three floors separated by entablamentations and different spaces in each of them. In the middle of the first floor is the main door and above it a colossal coat of arms of King Charles I of Spain and V of Germany.
The Alcázar did not manage to perform the function of royal residence perhaps because Philip II moved the capital to Madrid in 1561. The building has had various uses throughout its history and several restorations due to tragic events. It was burned in 1710 during the War of Succession, as in 1810 during the War of Independence, in 1877 it suffered several accidental burns, in 1936 it was almost completely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The current reconstruction was done during the years 1940-1961.
Since 2010 it has been home to the Museum of the Spanish Army and the Library of Castilla-La Mancha.
